Asger Techau from Kashmir has over the past 25 years been an entrenched part of the Danish music industry and the musical upbringing of most people in Denmark. Since 2002 he has co produced and made recordings on almost all KASHMIR releases from 1999 and onwards. In a collaboration with Kasper Eistrup, he composed and recorded the music for the 2008 tv series "Album" by Hella Joof. In 2013 he began composing music for commercials, and have among others been working for Mcdonalds, Saxo bank, Volkswagen, Dongenergy and Børnefonden. Alongside the roles of producer and drummer in Kashmir, Asger Techau has written a number of songs, some of which have been with him for 11 years. April 15th 2016, PHONETICS was released.
The first single and album opener "Breathe" was released on March 4, 2016. The song heralds the themes and production virtues of the album: Clean and dry production, wrapping a love letter to the person who you can be yourself with and relax around.
The nine songs on PHONETICS, describe situations where internal demons come knocking, and when the emotional chaos almost takes over on a hectic day. As existential anchor points on the album, songs like "Breathe", "No Misgivings" and "Passing Bubbles", all point to the love and its magic.
In May 2017, a little more than a year after he embarked on a solo carreer with the debut album 'Phonetics', Asger Techau is back with an EP that displays a different and more upbeat side of the experienced musician and songwriter's talent. 'WAVES' has been made in close collaboration with producer Caspar Hesselager (Hymns from Nineveh, The Eclectic Moniker, Palace Winter), which has manifested itself in spacious and richly textured soundscapes.
»The topics are personal reflections of life. It is songs that portray life in waves. From the highest point, where everything falls into the right place and love moves life forward. To the lowest point, where you witness it slowly slip through your fingers without having the strength to intervene. 'Voices' is about fighting with the big and small temptations in life, 'Stick in the Mud' portrays two people who are made for each other. As a contrast we have 'Temptation', where the relationship suddenly shatters and you discover sides of yourself, you didn't knew you had, and 'Chemicals & Alcohol', where you watch someone lose the grip and all you can do is stand on the sideline and await the time when you can be there for them again.« Techau says about the songs.
The collaboration between Hesselager and Techau is notably harmonious. The soundscapes are embossed in the producer's playful use of synthesizers as well as his keen ear on effective keyboard hooks and melodic passages. These elements perfectly augment the joyful energetic guitars and Techau's songwriting, and give the four songs on 'WAVES' a genuine feel-good vibe. A vibe that can be described as a patchwork in auditive colours.
The single precurser 'Voices' enjoys airplay on the Danish radio stations P6 Beat and P4, and the additional three songs on 'WAVES' continue in the same upbeat and enticing atmosphere, tailored and suited for the coming of the spring og summer. From the jangly electric & acoustic guitars and keyboards in 'Voices' and 'Temptation' throughout the energetic and persistant 'Stick in the Mud', carried by a tight interplay between bass and drums, on to the atmospheric rocking propulsion in 'Chemicals & Alcohol'.
'WAVES' is an EP that oozes of presence, power and musical vitamins.
'WAVES' was released worldwide on the international indie label ARTS & CRAFTS May 26th 2017.
You can't blame Asger Techau for resting on the laurels. 2016 saw the release of his debut album 'Phonetics'; last year the EP 'WAVES' landed and May 4th saw the release of the new EP entitled 'TIME' from the productive musician and songwriter. As with its predecessor, the new EP is made in collaboration with producer Caspar Hesselager (Hymns from Nineveh, The Eclectic Moniker, Palace Winter).
The duo has obviously found an effective modus operandi since the four tracks on the EP definitely demonstrate that Techau works well in creating dynamics and sonic diversity.
The musical expression contains refined drum patterns, melodic bass lines, chiming guitars and a playful use of synthesizers which all together create a universe with room for captivating energy (in the single 'Eraser') and lingering atmospheres (in the ambient closing track 'Giant').
Asger explains the songs:
»'DROP' is about not taking the easy way. Sometimes it seems so tempting, but everything really benefits from giving it a second thought and allow things some time and patience. 'ERASER' has a different vibe. Some people can have a 'cryptonite effect' on others to a degree where you lose yourself and stop fighting what you believe in. Only distance and time can soothe this effect and get your perspective back in sync. In 'TIME' I describe the echo of a life cut shorter than you expected and which already slowly dwindled before it ended. Remember to do everything you want before it's suddenly too late. 'GIANT' is about distancing yourself from bad situations and unhealthy relationships. Turn away instead of allowing yourself to be enthralled in a haze of fear and low self esteem«.
Asger Techau has thoroughly put his solo career on track and keeping him company in the studio
this time around has been a close circle of friends. Apart from Hesselager (piano, synths,
production, mix), his old bandmate from Kashmir, Mads Tunebjerg (bass), Morten Christian
Haxholm (bass) and Steffen Nordenstam (guitar) has lend their talents to Techau, who himself
handles the vocals, guitar, synths, drums and percussion.
'TIME' was released Friday May 4th 2018.
